Dislocated Workers Program

Program Location:
The Dislocated Workers’ Program site is located in downtown Fall River at the UMass Building, 139 South Main Street in what was once the Cherry and Webb Building. Parking permits are issued at no cost to students who enroll in the Dislocated Workers’ Program.

Program Overview:
This program is designed for those who have lost their jobs due to foreign trade and need to upgrade their remedial skills so that they may re-enter the workforce. Classes offered include ABE, ESOL, Pre-GED and GED. It is an open-entry/open-exit program that is offered 48 weeks per year.

Eligibility Requirements:
Prospective students may visit the Career Centers in Attleboro, Fall River, New Bedford, and Taunton to inquire if they are eligible to receive training under the Trade Adjustment Act (T.A.A.). Students must be referred by their career center counselors and schedule an appointment to visit the program prior to enrolling.

Program Schedule:
Classes are scheduled Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Students receive a total of 20 hours of remedial instruction per week consisting of fourteen hours of classroom instruction, two hours of independent study, and four hours of computer lab time. The program targets oral language development, reading, writing and math skills. In addition, job readiness and basic computer skills are integrated within the curriculum design.

Scope of Services:
ESOL Classes (26 or 52 week training contract) are offered to individuals who speak English as a second language and wish to improve their English speaking, reading, and writing skills.

ABE classes (26 or 52 week training contract) are offered to individuals who are interested in improving their reading, writing, and math skills. Students who have a high school diploma or GED and need to further enhance their basic skills may take advantage of the Remedial Skills Upgrading course (ABE III) offered for 26 weeks.

GED Preparation Classes (26 or 52 week training contract) are available to students whose goal it is to attain a GED. The course is designed to provide intense instruction in reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. The program objective is to prepare each individual for the GED examination.

Tutoring:
On-site tutorial group sessions are offered to students who are mandated by the Division of Career Services (DCS) to attend three hours of tutoring per week. The tutorial groups meet Monday through Wednesday for one hour each session.
