Nursing Advanced Standing options

Using the Advanced Standing Options, current Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) may qualify for admission into the nursing program and receive credit for past classes or work experience to help them graduate sooner.

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Challenge of Fundamentals Program

The Challenge of Fundamentals program is for qualified LPNs who have graduated from one of the following schools or any school not listed below more than three years ago:

  • Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School
  • Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School
  • Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical High School
  • Southeastern Regional Practical Nursing Program
  • Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School

To qualify for the program, applicants must have taken and passed the following courses with a grade of B– or greater:

  • High School Algebra & Chemistry
  • CSS 101 College Success Seminar
  • ENG 101 Writing from Experience
  • BIO 233 Human Anatomy and Physiology I
  • PSY 101 General Psychology

Prior to applying, participants must take the Excelsior Fundamentals of Nursing challenge exam and pass with a C or greater. For more information, see Excelsior College Credit by Exams.

The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is not required for this program.

How it works:
Students selected to participate in the Licensed Practical Nurse Challenge of Fundamentals Program are required to pass a two day course to reinforce fundamental nursing concepts.

After successful completion, the applicant will be awarded 8 credits for NUR 101 and is eligible for entrance into the second semester of the nursing program, and the nursing course NUR 102 Maternal Child Nursing.

Please note: Students must satisfy all curriculum requirements to obtain an Associate Degree in Nursing. Additional insurance, professional, and health screenings may be required to meet Nursing Program requirements. Please see the academic catalog for a complete listing of requirements.

How it works:
Priority is given to those student who apply before April 1 for the next academic year. Applications are only complete when all requirements listed above are fulfilled. Selection is competitive and based upon academic record and space available.
