How to Register to Vote in Massachusetts

Who may register?
Only a person who is:

  • - a US citizen, and
  • - a resident of Massachusetts, and
  • - 18 years old on or before election day (must still meet registration deadlines set forth below)
How can I register to vote? When? Where?
You may register to vote:
  • - In person or by mail, by completing a mail-in registration form and delivering it to:
  • - your city or town election office,
    - at any local election office in any city or town in the state
  • - at any registration event you encounter anywhere in Massachusetts,
  • - when applying for or renewing your driver's license at the Registry of Motor Vehicles

By mail: Mail-in registration forms are widely available. To obtain a mail-in registration:

  • Download the form: Visit the Massachusetts Secretary of State for information. You cannot register to vote via the internet, but you can request a voter registration form to register to vote in Massachusetts. To do this, download the Voter Registration Form , completely fill out the information and return it by mail.
  • Telephone: Call 617.727.2828 or 800.462.VOTE and a form will be sent to you. 
  •  At the Registry of Motor Vehicles: When applying for or renewing your driver's license at the Registry of Motor Vehicles ask for them to register you to vote. Keep your motor voter receipt until you receive confirmation from your local election official. If you do not receive any confirmation, please contact your local election office to verify your voting status.
  •  In person: You can pick up a form on BCC campuses.

Forms are available:

  • BCC Fall River Campus at the Office of Student Engagement, Commonwealth College Center, G Building and at the Farley Learning Resource Center, A building.
  • At the BCC New Bedford Campus, forms are available in the Library Learning Commons, Room 168.
  • -At the BCC Attleboro Center, forms are available at the Enrollment Center.
    Forms are available in many languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Cape Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole, Chinese, Khmer, Russian and Vietnamese.
Mail the completed form to your local city or town hall. You should receive a confirmation notice in 2 to 3 weeks. If you do not receive a confirmation notice, or wish to confirm your voter registration status, please contact your local City or Town Clerk to verify your voting status. You will not be registered to vote until you return the completed voter registration form to your local city/town hall.

Please note: When registering by mail, your voter registration form must be postmarked by the deadline for you to be eligible. To register to vote in person, you must appear and register at a registration location by 8 p.m. on the last day to register. (Registration sessions will be held in cities and towns on the last day to register from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m., except in towns having less than 1500 registered voters, registration sessions will be held from 2 - 4 p.m. and from 7 - 8 p.m.)

In Person: Go to a local election office in any city or town in the state and at any registration event you encounter anywhere in Massachusetts.

To register to vote in person, you must appear and register at a registration location by 8 p.m. on the last day to register. (Registration sessions will be held in cities and towns on the last day to register from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m., except in towns having less than 1500 registered voters, registration sessions will be held from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. - 8 p.m.) Registration deadlines are 20 days before all primaries and elections, and/or 10 days before a special town meeting.
