Step Up to College
The Step Up to College program provides a leg-up for graduates of the High School Equivalency Test and adult diploma programs who are thinking of enrolling in college classes.
Students in the program become integrated with the college community. It can be tough to make the transition into college, so we provide our students with a high level of support as they make the transition to the college environment and coursework. By taking specialized courses, which are offered in the evening, Step Up to College students are given a foundation to become a successful college student.
Step Up to College staff help students complete BCC applications, fill out course registration and financial aid info, and take placement testing. They also work with new students to make them aware of College services and the campus as a whole. All of this attention is individualized. Students in Step Up to College are given individual attention to help them succeed.
Students receive credits and grades that become part of their College record and count towards their GPA and SPI. Whether or not you can apply the credits towards a degree or certificate depends on the results of your College Placement tests and your choice of degree or certificate program.
Any Massachusetts resident who has graduated from a GED or adult diploma program is eligible for Step Up to College. In order to enroll, students must take the Massachusetts Adult Proficiency Test (MAPT) and obtain scores of 500 or better in reading and 400 or better in math.
Because the College receives a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education to fund this program, the classes (and texts!) are offered at no cost to qualified applicants.
