Confidentiality & Professional Ethics
Confidentiality is an important aspect of counseling. What is shared with a counselor is private. There are specific situations, however, when the counselor is required by law to breach confidentiality; these include situations when there is a possibility that the student may harm himself/herself or someone else, commit a crime, or when a counselor is subpoenaed by a court of law. Any student who sees a counselor in our center will be asked to sign our confidentiality policy.
It is a violation of professional ethics for more than one counselor to provide therapy at the same time. Therefore, students may not see both a private therapist and a BCC counselor for personal counseling. However, students who are seeing an outside therapist can certainly see any counselor for academic guidance.
